TOCI / INCDS Climate Awareness Competition: Social Media

The Climate Awareness Competition is part of the outcomes of the Pulitzer ISF Africa 2024 Programme, implemented by The Olympus Consciousness Initiative (TOCI) in collaboration with the Institute of Nigeria-China Development Studies (INCDS), University of Lagos and with the support of the Pulitzer Center. This initiative aims to promote innovative approaches to climate action and foster impactful engagement within the University of Lagos community. The competition is a direct result of the Climate Change Workshop held on December 12, 2024. The workshop underscored the need for increased climate literacy and local action, which this competition seeks to amplify through creative engagement and thought leadership..

In this category, participants are invited to create compelling social media content that raises climate awareness and inspires action within the university. Below are the detailed terms and conditions for participation.

Eligibility

  1. Open to students, staff, and faculty members of the University of Lagos.
  2. Participants can submit entries individually or as a team (identified as Social Media Channels).
  3. All content must be original and created specifically for this competition.

Competition Guidelines

  1. Theme: Entries should focus on promoting climate awareness, sustainability, and actionable steps for addressing climate challenges within the University of Lagos community.
  2. Content Formats: Participants can submit:
    • Social media posts (text, graphics, memes, etc.).
    • Short videos (skits, reels, or TikToks) not exceeding 2 minutes.
    • A thread or series of posts (e.g., tweets or Instagram carousel).
  3. Platforms: Content must be designed for platforms such as Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, or TikTok.
  4. Submission Process: Entries should be in the form of a document / email which includes:
    • A description of the target audience and the intended message.
    • The Social Media Page, Handle or Hashtag to be evaluated.
  5. Language: Submissions must be in English or Pidgin English.
  6. Deadline: Submissions must be sent by email to climatechangestories@toci.ng with the subject [Social Media – Participant / Team Name] on or before 15th January 2024, 11:59PM (WAT). Late submissions will not be considered.

Evaluation Criteria

Submissions will be judged based on the following:

  1. Relevance to Theme: Effectiveness in raising climate awareness within the University of Lagos context.
  2. Creativity: Innovation and originality in the approach and presentation.
  3. Engagement Potential: Ability to inspire action and resonate with the audience.
  4. Quality: Overall production value, clarity, and coherence of the content.
  5. Impact: The potential reach and influence of the campaign.

Awards and Prizes

  1. The first-place winner will receive a cash prize of ₦50,000, a certificate of recognition, and the opportunity to feature their campaign on TOCI’s Climate Awareness Network.
  2. Selected campaigns may be showcased on official social media channels of TOCI and INCDS to amplify their message.

Submission Process

  1. Participants must submit their entries by email to climatechangestories@toci.ng with the subject [Social Media – Participant / Team Name] on or before 15th January 2024, 11:59PM (WAT). Late submissions will not be considered
  2. Submissions should include the participant’s name, department or faculty, and contact details.

General Terms and Conditions

  1. By submitting an entry, participants grant TOCI and INCDS the rights to use the content for non-commercial, educational, or promotional purposes, with appropriate credit.
  2. Plagiarism or use of copyrighted materials without permission will result in disqualification.
  3. Participants are responsible for ensuring their content aligns with the policies and guidelines of the social media platforms they utilize.
  4. The decisions of the judges are final and binding.
  5. The organizers reserve the right to modify the winning entries for broader outreach, in consultation with the participants.
  6. Participation constitutes acceptance of these terms and conditions.
